Endless Summer Hydrangea
I love, love, love hydrangeas. I think the blooms are just gorgeous. They just have an old-fashioned romantic feel to them.
In the two years I have been living at my current house I have planted oakleaf hydrangeas and lacecap hydrangeas. I have not planted any mophead hydrangeas, but that is about to change. If I don’t buy any other plant this year the one plant I must have is endless summer hydrangea.
Endless summer hydrangea is a variety of the Hydrangea macrophylla family. Commonly called bigleaf or mophead hydrangeas. These hydrangeas are fairly easy to grow. Mophead hydrangeas prefer to be planted where they receive sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon. Mophead hydrangeas also need regular watering to look and bloom their best.
The most unique characteristic of all mophead hydrangeas, including endless summer hydrangea, is the ability of the blooms to change color, depending on the acidity of the soil. In alkaline soils the blooms will be in the pink family in acid soils the blooms will be in the blue family.
You may be wondering what is so special about endless summer hydrangea. Most mophead hydrangeas bloom on old wood, endless summer hydrangea blooms on old wood and new as well. My mother planted an endless summer hydrangea last year and at Thanksgiving it was still blooming like crazy.
Here are links to a couple of sites with more information about hydrangeas as well as some beautiful pictures.
